How to Replant Your Houseplant

How to Replant Your Houseplant

Replanting your houseplant is essential for your houseplant to continue to thrive and grow to a mature and healthy plant. Replanting a plant means to give your plant a new home that is bigger than the pot that it is in. Plants need to be replanted simply because the roots out grow the container it is in. There are a few tell tale signs your plant is ready for a new home.

The one sign is the plant simply looks too big for the container. The plant could be leaning or looks too tall for the container it’s in. The biggest sign is that if the plant is in a container that has holes on the bottom, the roots will be growing out of the bottom. If the roots are visible then your plant is definitely ready for a new home.

One thing to remember when replanting your houseplant is that you don’t want to over do it. You want to choose a container that is about 1”-2” bigger than the container it is in. So if your plant is in a 4” container then use a 5”-6” container. If you use a pot that is too big that the roots can’t stretch far enough to drink.

When replanting, the first thing you want to do is have your new container ready. Simply line the bottom of the new container with some fresh soil. The day you usually do your watering is the perfect day to replant. This means the soil is dry and hard enough so when you pull the plant out, the roots and soil will come up all in one piece. The next thing you want to do is massage the root ball. Loosen up all of those bunches up roots. Place the plant into its new container and surround the roots with new, fresh soil. Make sure it’s tightly packed and all of the roots are covered. The final step after replanting a house plant is water your plant really well. Make sure it’s fully hydrated. After all of that stress, the roots could use a good water to stay happy and healthy.
