Creating a Succulent Terrarium

Creating a Succulent Terrarium

Step 1

Pick out your container. Fish bowls make a great choice for succulent terrariums. They are the perfect size for your succulents to flourish and leaves enough space for some added decorations.

Step 2

Add a small layer of rocks. You want enough rocks to line the bottom so it will act as drainage. Succulents require very little water so in case you do over water your terrarium, this will help so the extra water will sit on the bottom.

Step 3

Add a small layer of soil. You want enough soil so you will be able to plant your succulents. Make sure the roots are covered in soil so they can survive.

Step 4

Pick out your succulents. Choose low maintenance succulents (Haworthias and Echevarias make great choices). Succulents come in all different shapes, sizes and colors. Choose plants with different textures and colors if you want a fun colorful theme or pick similar color succulents if you want a more modern feel. Be sure you choose succulents that fit within your bowl so the succulents have enough room to grow.

Step 5

Plant. Now it’s planting time. Carefully take your succulent out of the container. You can gently loosen up the roots and soil so the roots will be able to stretch and grow properly. Make sure all of the roots are covered with soil.

Step 6

Decorate!

This is the fun part! Decorating! Moss, sand, rocks, gems, wood chips, shells, or mini figurines make great choices. Be sure to have fun! Be creative. And enjoy!!

Caring for your succulent terrarium.

The general rule for watering succulents is once a month. Most people like to mist their terrariums or use a small watering bottle to gently water when the soil is completely dry.

You can give your succulent a little bit of light but be sure to rotate every once in a while so your terrarium gets plenty of light.

If you do start to see brown leaves be sure to pluck them off as soon as you see them to promote healthy growth and make sure the rest of your terrarium doesn’t get rotted.
