All About Air Plants

Air plants, also known as Tillandsia, are fascinating and unique houseplants. They do not require soil to grow which makes them a very popular choice when choosing a new houseplant. Instead of rooting themselves into the ground, they attach themselves to other surfaces such as trees and rocks when they are in the wild. When kept as a houseplant, people like to place them inside glass vessels for a terrarium look or you can put them on top of containers or windowsills. They are in the same family as bromeliads and pineapple plants. When kept as a house plant, airplants usually grow to about 12 inches tall but in their native habitat, they can grow up to 7 feet.

Care:

  • Light: Air plants like bright, but indirect light. Alot of direct sunlight can burn their leaves.
  • Watering: Because air plants do not have traditional roots, they need to be misted every other day or soak them once a week. Soak them for about 20 minutes once a week. Be sure to not let them sit in moisture for too long or they will rot.
  • Environment: Air plants like warm and humid climates.
  • Trimming: Make sure to trim your air plant if the are showing brow spots to promote new growth.

Air plants are supposed to be low-maintenance plants that will add a touch of beauty to your home.
